I went on an airboat ride today. It’s something I haven’t done since I was a kid. Back then I used to just love the thought of going fast on a boat. This time, I had a new way of looking at the environment and appreciated that it was there. I took a few pictures which you can see in the slide show. I’m lucky that the Everglades is in my backyard. If you ever visit good old South Florida, consider going to Everglades Safari for an airboat ride. You’ll be supporting conservation efforts and seeing the only Everglades in the world. It’s one for the bucket list, that’s for sure.

Day 14: Progress - Tomatoes

My little tomato plant has come out of it’s funk in the last 2 weeks and has sprouted some new leaflets and another tomato! I realized the problem was me- I was over-watering it. Compare the progress here: http://mygreenyear.wordpress.com/2012/01/01/day-1-my-green-thumb/

I let it be for some time, and as it got colder the soil has dried up nicely. Now I can water it again to feed the new tomato. Excited me is very excited.

Till Tomorrow!

Day 13: Cooking

What better to do on a Friday night than eat pizza and watch Anime with your boyfriend? How about MAKE your own pizzas and CHOW DOWN!

This my friends, is very green. No driving to a Pizza Hut and wasting gas. No overpriced reheated pizza. Just yummy veggie toppings (which you can put AS MUCH as you desire!), whole wheat crust and bake! Here are the results of our pizza extravaganza!

The before pizzas-ingredients and all look so yummy! His is to the left, Hers is to the right.

They just look so....so delicious!

Want a recipie? Try imagination! That’s why pizza is so great. Not only is it a vegetable (according to some…) but it can have anything on it. My boyfriend put the whole planet on his, while I tried to be more cheese-mushroomy. It was an overall success. :)

Till Tomorrow!

My Alternative Breaks group took up my entire evening. If you don’t know what that is, I’ll explain. I am a leader of a group of student volunteers that are going to do community service during our Spring Break to address a pressing world issue. The issue we are concerned with is the Environment (yay!) and we will be going to the Awbury Arboretum in Philadelphia Pennsylvania for a week to help them in any way possible. Mostly we will be doing manual labor to promote ecological restoration. For the past few months we (13 of us) have been fundraising in order to make our trip possible. My job as a Site Leader is to facilitate their experience and education before and throughout the trip. It has so far been a great but stressful experience for myself being a Site Leader. Last May I went to Costa Rica with my first aB group only as a participant, and that experience drive me to want to be a Site Leader so I could share my experience and create an even better one for others. I’ll talk about my Costa Rica trip sometime soon. My Philadelphia trip is in about 2 months so there are many things I still need to work on. If you’re curious to learn more about aB and my group, here are some links to check out:

I got this free notebook and eco pen for pledging to be green!

My friend got these awesome pens at a pharmacy store- They are made with 80% post consumer plastic. The maker is Pilot and they are called Bottle 2 Pen.

It may have cost me more money, but these brand of notebooks are sold at my school and I can't help myself but spend the extra cash on them. It feels great being green :)

Being a college student, I try my best! Sorry for the hiatus but it goes with the territory.

Till Tomorrow!

Day 10: Pledge to Be Seen Going Green

Today was a again a stressful day of school. I almost forgot to post something and head straight to sleep. Nothing green came my way today until I noticed a green table in my university’s Graham Center. It intrigued me. The table was about campus transportation, and they were offering a chance to win a $100 gift card. What you had to do was sign a pledge stating that you will use alternate forms of transportation to go to campus during this month. The more times you use it, the better your chances of winning. And without hesitation, I signed it! On Saturday I am going to bike to my campus for work, and I’m going to blog about my experience. Hopefully it will be a good one. The link for more information about my campus Go Green initiatives is above. I always try my best to fulfill them.

Other than that, I had a whole day of Ecology classes and it is safe to say I may want to become an Ecologist in my future. I love the subject more than anything I’ve ever been forced to learn. I’m probably going to have some fun adventures in my lab that are going to be blog worthy, so watch out for those!

Till Tomorrow!

Day 9: School

Day 9: School

The new spring semester started at my university today and I’m already stressed. In order to alleviate my stress levels so early in the year I’ve made the conscious decision to spend my free time outside. Like today for example. I’ll be at school from 10am to 10pm going to class, meetings, and work. I’ve only spent maybe an hour inside and have taken advantage of the great weather and shade from trees to relax me. As I type I’m sitting on the 3rd floor of the chemistry building’s breezeway with my friends.

Most of the time I’m inside is because I’m looking for an outlet to power my laptop battery. In order to lessen my dependence of being inside I bought a new 9 cell battery which lasts longer, I charge it fully being careful not to overcharge, and I keep the display on its dimmest setting so that my laptop lasts as long as I need it for.

I’m also taking advantage of my school’s gym this semester. If I’m not outside enjoying the day I’ll probably be in a fitness class doing yoga or spinning. I’m also eating healthier at my campus too. I’ll be doing vegetarian lunch and dinner on my long days. No more fast food for me.

I am excited for 2 of my classes this year. I’m taking Marine Protected Areas and Ecology, both with labs. I can’t wait to learn more about how I could maybe become a conservation wildlife manager in my future.

With school starting, things may get a bit crazy. But please bear with me as crazy is really the only way I function.

Till Tomorrow!
